In this episode of The Unity Code, I’m calling out something that’s been sitting wrong with me for a while—fear-based language in the spiritual industry.

After attending a group reading with a well-known practitioner, I witnessed something that happens far too often:
clients being told they had curses, attachments, and energetic problems they couldn’t fix on their own… followed by an immediate upsell.

🚩 Red flag.

So let’s break this down.

In this episode, I dive into:

  • The truth about “curses” and “attachments” in spirituality
  • How fear-based language impacts your nervous system (and your wallet)
  • Why some practitioners use disempowering narratives to keep you dependent
  • The difference between ancestral patterns vs. “curses”
  • What energy exchange actually looks like (without the fear tactics)
  • How to reclaim your power and trust your own connection to spirit

Here’s the reality:
You are not broken.
You are not cursed.
And you do not need someone else to “fix” you.

This episode is about discernment, sovereignty, and rewriting the language of spirituality so it actually empowers you.

Because the moment you change the narrative…  everything changes.

Welcome And A Bone To Pick

SPEAKER_00

Everyone, welcome back to the Unity Code. I have a bone to pick today. I really do. I was recently on a group reading call. It was great. It was so great. I it popped up on one of my social media feeds, clear as day. And I didn't have any plans that night. And I said, Spirit, am I supposed to be there? And they said, Yes, I'm supposed to be there. So I ended up buying a ticket to what is normally a sold-out event. And I signed on with eight of my closest strangers for this reading with a very renowned person whose things that I refer to and recommend to other people. I'm just going to keep it totally neutral. I'm so sorry, everybody. Probably because of what I'm going to say later in this episode. But um it was a really, really beautiful unfolding experience being in a group reading with somebody else. Like as the participant, not as the leader, and receiving the reading and seeing how somebody that I look up to, how they hold the energetic space and room for soul-level readings. So I went into the session having my question, which Spirit said, let's ask about the next lesson that you're meant to learn this lifetime. And I said, That sounds really cool. So I just kind of wrote that question down because they asked everyone to come with one question. And then we got started. And the readings that unfolded, as always, held a beautiful theme of sovereignty and reclaiming power. And it was a really lovely evening again with these eight beautiful women that were there in the Zoom room with us. But it was really freaking interesting. Because when she got to one woman who had had a very, very difficult time with her partner, with her career, with her own battles with anxiety and depression. It was at that point that this woman informed her, informed the client receiving the reading that she, in fact, had a family curse and likely an attachment. Oh my God. Could you, could you red flag everybody? Fucking giant red flag. It's like that meme guy on TikTok that holds the flags up like this one. I was just like, oh no. And I immediately disconnected my energy from the session. I really did. I energetically took a step back and started to immediately discount everything that she was saying because of her using the words curse and attachment. And I paid a lot of money for this. So I didn't, I didn't quite physically jump ship in the meeting, but I did get my phone out in the middle of it and I texted the witches and I said, What do you, what do you all think of practitioners who use the words curse and attachment? And this is a really interesting topic for me, um, especially as I'm kind of going through my second round of shaman school with a very different amazing practitioner that I really, really respect. And I've already learned more in God, two months than I have an entire year with the other program. And I know, and I know she believes attachments are a thing. I'm not quite there yet. I don't, I'm not quite there yet. I'm gonna I'm gonna put the attachment word to the side. But whenever I hear the word curse, how fucking disempowering is that word? How disempowering is that word? It implies that you were handed something, some dismal future, some low vibration negative energy that was not your fault to begin with, and yet you will bear the weight of. I'm sure I could Google it, but the curse of the Kennedys, like JFK being assassinated, like uh his brother dying in a plane, right? Um was his brother's son, right? He was a younger guy. So, so the idea that the family has this curse that's being sent down through the generations, and to me, that's some bullshit. And it really got me thinking about the words practitioners use to disempower you and keep you in a fear-based state of mind, so that you will continue to rely on them as the gatekeepers of the light, so that you can receive their help and guidance to remove the curse and to remove the attachment. Right? Because in both instances where this information was relayed to, by the way, multiple clients, multiple clients had attachments according to her, it became an automatic upsell of come to my healing session, set up a one-on-one with me, and we will deal with the curse. We will clear out the attachment in your energetic field. And the way in which she flawlessly and seamlessly continued to upsell herself in this session. Number one, it was kind of impressive. Like it was, she just the words that like they just flowed out of her mouth. Obviously, she has done this a million times, right? Obviously, the the natural state in which she just casually mentioned, oh, that's okay, we can remove that attachment. I have this session, it's 30 minutes. Sign up on my website, I'm be more than happy to help you through that, right? And the same with the curse exercise. Because the reality of this work is, yeah, as practitioners, we see some shit. Like we see some shit. But I don't see anything that can create the chokehold that all these fear-based practitioners want you to believe. Because the words that they use are loaded on purpose to get you to sign up for more sessions, to give them more money, to make them feel like they're the experts, and that you have no power within yourself to heal yourself, help yourself make yourself whole. And by the way, you already are whole. You already are healed. Your soul is perfect, and so the idea of curses and attachments, probably famous last words, are enough for me to literally probably throw her books away. Yeah, she has books to to like unfollow her on social media. But I think that's the thing about these older practitioners, and I'm gonna say older because she is a very seasoned professional. She's probably been doing this 20 or 30 years, which is why I have the utmost respect for people who have been doing this work for so long. Because obviously, the more that you do this work, the more that you're gonna see, the more that you're gonna be able to access, you know, very nuanced information. Not the beginners can't do it either, but with more practice comes more experience, comes more hopefully accuracy, not always. But some of these old school practitioners were trained in the old ways. Do you all see those ridiculous Sylvia Brown videos posting all over social media lately? Where the woman's like, What's up with the haunted people in my house? And she's like, Oh, it was built on an old Indian burial ground. And the woman's like, my house was from 1990. And they're like, oh, no, no, no, the one before that, right? Um the the most ridiculous of readings ever on the face of the planet. Like the this is the era in which they were taught their spiritual modalities. And so the idea of curses, the idea of attachments, the idea of in the mediumship world, the checklist, the not bringing the messages, right? These were all very, oh, hang on, it's not what it seems. Spirit is telling me. Because there were practitioners, okay, so this is directly from spirit. There were practitioners who did practice, quote unquote, more in the light. I want to say it that way. However, many of them essentially were using spirituality to escape some of the more negative social constructs, including religion. But it, but many of them were started in, had experiences that started in the church or as children where they didn't understand some of the things that they were seeing. And when you don't understand it, your brain is gonna make up a very negative low vibration story, very fear-based story, because that's what our brain does. That's what our nervous system does when it takes over and tries to make sense of things that we don't understand. It's gonna make a fear-based assumption so that you stay safe. Oh, it's really interesting. So a lot of these practitioners come from a very fear-based perspective. But the reality is doing the work that I do, there is nothing that anyone can cannot overcome. Like you are put on this planet. You choose to come on this planet to heal the things that have not been healed before. You know, obviously to enjoy the emotions, enjoy, you know, being here in a beautiful physical realm, but also it's to continue to learn the lessons your soul has not yet learned. And so, with that is overcoming the energetic obstacles that have come before you, whether it is from your past lives, whether it is from your family lineage, right? Whether it is even from your community, the United States, everybody, right? Like we think that we're just solving our own problems, but the reality is that we are we are one component of a giant web where everything impacts each other. And so we don't just come here to fix our own goddamn problems. Sorry. We come here to fix all the problems that we possibly can at all different levels of humanity. And what I want you to walk away with is that one tiny change can make huge fucking impacts. It's the ripple effect of the little things that you do that get amplified the further and further they go. It's just, it's just like the seven degrees of Kevin Bacon, everybody, right? It's the same, same freaking idea. So, so I'm gonna really encourage you to think about the words that practitioners are using, especially out on TikTok right now. TikTok is a whole lot of special right now, especially with the mediumship practitioners and the psychic practitioners and the tarot practitioners. Like they're so many of them are driven from a fear-based perspective, from a very uneducated, misinformed perspective. Um, I can't even with the TikTok crowd that are doing all these lives lately. They're so bad. Like they're so, so bad. So take a look when you hear those words of attachment, of right? Of curse, of stuck. All of these words that imply disempowerment. And I want you to like just take a moment to say, where does where does that show up on my body? When you hear those words, where do like do a little body scan? Where does fear show up in your body? For me, it shows up in my shoulders, it shows up in the back of my neck. And so when I hear those words and I have that physical reaction, the again, the physical makes it feel real and it feels uncomfortable. And it makes me want to say, what do I have to sign up for in order for that energy, that yuck feeling in my shoulders and neck to go away. And so these practitioners are using science because this is science, your nervous system to get a chokehold on you to spend more money. It's what all the scammers do. You have a curse, let me help you remove it, right? I've had my own friends text me to say it's not real, right? I had this person say that I'm curse, it's not real, right? Like, oh my God. If you can fool my friends, imagine how many people they're fooling out there in the entire marketplace with this stuff because it works. And so let's change the narrative. Let's change the words that we use. Let's bring integrity into this work if you're using words like this. Because a curse is not something that is disempowering. To me, when I hear the word curse, I need to reframe it as energetic patterns that have been passed down through your ancestral lineage, which is a real thing that can be healed. Because if I come from a long line of narcissistic women on both sides, you could call that a curse. I could call that an opportunity for change. It's all in how you position it. When it comes to attachments, and again, verdict is still out. I'll speak by what I know at this time, as I always do, subject to change. You know, the idea of attachments, the way that I was taught and the way that most people talk about attachments, are like energetic leeches that stick onto you and you have no idea because they're so sneaky. And while I think that might be true, if you frame it in the context of you being in a really good mood, sitting down with your best friend who's in a really shitty mood, and they leave feeling great, and you leave like feeling shit, because you have swapped energies. You've created an energetic connection between the two of you and swapped energies. Right? And as you walk away, you're stuck with the low, they get to keep the high. So that things don't have the opportunity to swap your energy, so that you don't have the opportunity to allow that into your field in the first place. Again, you can change the narrative. You can get empowered, you can learn the ways that you can take care of this yourself, because I promise you, most of these things you absolutely can. So change the perspective of the words that you don't like. Because as my team told me in the session, as I energetically detached from the group reading, they said, number one, Nicole, this is for fun. This is not meant to be super serious work. This is meant to be engaging, enlightening, changing perspectives, changing people's lives. But it doesn't have to be miserable. It can be fun too. And I'm not saying what I do is miserable by any means, but I do take it very seriously because I've seen the benefits of change through this work. And I bring the high integrity, yada, yada, yada. And so I do take this work very seriously. But when I'm getting a reading, my goal shouldn't be to receive. This is for me personally, by the way, life-changing information because I'm setting the bar too fucking high. Because the reality is, is everything I need is probably within me anyway. It is within me. They made me correct myself in saying that. So the goal is fun. And then number two, they suggested I start just reframing the words because some of these practitioners don't know better. They haven't had the opportunity to think outside the box. They haven't had the need to think outside the box because they've had clients for 20 years. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. I hope that is never true with me, by the way. I hope, I hope I am always learning new tricks. I hope I am always adjusting for the energy that is coming in that is greater than the energy that came before it. Please challenge me if I become an old dog that has no new tricks. Oh, God, no. That would be miserable. And so empower yourself, change the narrative of these words. Doesn't mean we have to throw away all the practitioners that use these words. I'm sorry. Ugh, sometimes I want to. We shouldn't, because there's something to learn in everybody. And as my team likes to point out, sometimes somebody has to go through a reading from Sylvia Brown on live TV to get to the practitioner that they are meant to get to. And so, no matter how old school, how outdated, or how amazing some practitioners there are out there, every single one of them serves a purpose for somebody to advance their connection with spirit. And that is the real lesson here. Thank you so much, everybody. I have loved chatting with you. today. If you have any questions, comments, toss them um on my Instagram page. I think that's the easiest place to put it. The Unity Code podcast. All right. Sending you all love. Take care.
